The Yard
Introduction
Hi! I’m Andrea, owner and designer of Pinecones from the Yard. In September 2020, my three daughters and I walked through our yard on a scavenger hunt for items to make crafts. The collection of pinecones became a wreath for our front door. It was so well liked, I duplicated it for family, then friends and from there this business journey began.
I reside in Voorheesville, NY (which is apart of the Capital Region) with my husband of 20 years, our four children, and one energetic Vizsla pup. We love spending time outdoors, so hunting for pinecones fits right into our lifestyle.
At the time I started this small business I was a stay-at-home Mom. Prior to that, I worked in business management for 18 years and hold a Bachelors degree in Business Administration. Building this small business from the ground up has been rewarding. Watching myself grow and learn is all I could ask of my own children when they set out to try something new.
I look forward to making a pinecone design for your home. ~Andrea
The Process
Harvesting pinecones is the first step to my designs. Each pinecone is hand picked after falling from the tree. The majority of the pinecones come from New York’s capital region. Others are picked from the Adirondacks while camping with my family. The largest cones are gathered in Florida by my favorite Uncle, we call him the Pinecone collector.
Pinecones are then baked in a 200 degree oven for two hours. This dries the cone, seals the sap, kills germs and any bugs. At this point most pinecones are ready to be painted, but there are some that need to be cut either by hand or saw. My husband is my Saw Man, he takes care of all cones that require a saw cut.
Wreaths are made using a variety of materials. Arrangement containers will differ each season. Boards are made on reclaimed barn wood purchased from The Old Goat Wood Shop in Voorheesville, NY. To ensure a clean smooth surface, all wood is prepped in our workshop.
Next comes planning, painting and crafting a design. I love when my vision transforms into a completed product.
